Why tracking your bankroll matters
Memory is a terrible accountant. We remember the big win and forget the slow leaks. Writing everything down gives you the truth: what you put in, what you took out and where it went. It also makes it much easier to stick to a budget, because you can see when you are close to your limit.
What to log
Keep it simple. You only need three kinds of entries:
- Deposits: every time you add money to a gambling account, with the date and amount.
- Withdrawals: every time you take money out, with the date and amount.
- Bets or sessions: what you played, such as sportsbook, slots, live dealer, racing or poker, how much you staked and the result.
Logging each bet gives the most detail. Logging each session (for example, "slots, Tuesday night, staked this much, ended with that much") is fine if per-bet logging feels like too much.
The numbers that matter
Once you are logging, a few simple calculations tell you most of what you need to know:
- Profit or loss: what you have withdrawn plus what is still in your account, minus what you deposited.
- Win rate: the number of winning bets divided by the total number of bets. This is most useful for sports and racing.
- ROI (return on investment): your profit divided by the total amount you staked. It shows how efficiently your money is working.
Split these by section and you will quickly see which games are working for you and which are quietly costing you.
A monthly check-in routine
Once a month, I sit down for ten minutes and look at the month's chart. Was I up or down? Which section drove it? Did I stick to my budget? Then I set next month's limit. That small habit keeps gambling as entertainment rather than something that runs away from me.
Get the free tracker
I built a free Excel bankroll tracker that handles all of this. You log deposits, withdrawals and bets, and it calculates your profit/loss, win rate and ROI and draws a monthly chart. It works in Excel, Google Sheets and Numbers. A Pro version with separate sheets for peer-to-peer poker, sportsbook, online casino games and live dealers is coming soon.
Tracking is a safety tool too
A tracker is not only for chasing profit. It is one of the best responsible gambling tools there is. If the numbers show you are spending more than you planned, that is your cue to step back. Set limits, take breaks, and if gambling stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER for free, confidential help.
